After Midnight - Silk Art Quilt

Deborah Younglao silk art quilt
After Midnight, 16 x 20. Dyes and acrylic paint on silk,
hand and machine embellished, mounted on silk-covered stretched canvas.
Purchase info here on my website.

She's done! A fairy blowing fairy blowing fairy dust into the cosmos to become stars. I did some more hand stitching, including lots of tiny French knots with silver thread for the fairy dust. The stars are a mix of splattered silver paint and white/silvery glass beads. I finished the edges of the painted piece with a layer of black, then silver, then purple zigzag. The purple doesn't cover the silver completely, so some sparkle shows through. For the background I dyed another piece of silk black, blue and purple, and splattered it with a darker silver paint than what I used for the main piece - so it still gives the impression of stars but remains in the background. Click on the image to enlarge and see the stitching and beading better.

OK!
I just finished writing a 1100 word piece based on your art! It didn't go where I thought it would but it fits with my NANO novel :) Once I get it edited I will post it!

Hey Deborah, What a lovely, magical, with just the right touch of whimsey painting. I feel like I could be right in this scene.

It feels so whimsical and dreamy, perfect to hang in a bedroom. How will you frame it/display it?

It's amazing how you can take a scrap of dyed silk you found and work it into this enchanting scene. The blues are lovely and now, when I look at this, I see, not the rippling water I saw when you first showed us this material, but the night sky you envisioned, full of magic and mystery and fairy dust. Bravo!

Thank you Don - I'm glad I've helped broaden your horizons a bit when it comes to quilts!

Hey Robin - I was thinking the same thing - a little girl's bedroom would be ideal! It's mounted on stretched canvas. The black piece wraps to the back of the canvas so it's ready to hang as is.

Elizabeth, Susan, Karen, your words describe just what I was hoping to convey - thank you!

Angella I agree that water would have been the logical way to go here, but it did speak 'night sky' to me, and now that it's finished, I see why.

Michelle, thanks for getting me a new fan! :>
